He's just doing it to make a point, and he's being stupid.

I really doubt it will ever get out of committee.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20272978.post-1164121184259975512006-11-21T09:59:00.000-05:002006-11-21T09:59:00.000-05:00I've listened to Rangel speak on this matter many ...I've listened to Rangel speak on this matter many times and I believe he's sincere - he's truly under the misguided belief (as are many others in the liberal elite) that the volunteer military mainly attracts the poor and uneducated:

"For those who say the poor fight better, I say give the rich a chance."

So I don't think Rangel is simply trying to make a political point - I think he actually believes this crap. Pelosi and other Dems are dismissing the draft idea, but as Chairman of Ways & Means, Rangel is going to carry a lot of juice in the next Congress, and I don't think he's going to go away quietly.Garryhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15501085297163581710noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-20272978.post-1164092837288103712006-11-21T02:07:00.000-05:002006-11-21T02:07:00.000-05:00Rangel is being an idiot. That's as bad as the "Stay the course" mentality that has kept us in Iraq so long. I wish the dough heads in Washington-- Republican and Democrat alike-- would learn that people are more important than politics.

Talk Left had this to say:

--"For all you naysayers who thought we were crazy when we wrote about bringing back the draft, here it is, Charlie Rangel, obviously having a deranged moment, is introducing a bill to reinstate the draft.

Rangel mistakenly thinks that a draft would have prevented the war in Iraq.

"There's no question in my mind that this president and this administration would never have invaded Iraq, especially on the flimsy evidence that was presented to the Congress, if indeed we had a draft and members of Congress and the administration thought that their kids from their communities would be placed in harm's way," Rangel said.

A draft would not have prevented Iraq any more than it prevented Vietnam. I cannot support risking the lives of this country's youth to make a political point. They should not be used as pawns in the war debate.

Let's hope Rangel's bill dies as swift a death this year as it did in 2004."--

Sanity will prevail!
